Day Skipper (Local Waters) PDF Print E-mail

NB. You cannot sail a yacht in SA waters unless you have a Day Skippers licence approved by SA Sailing & you cannot sail a yacht at night unless you have a valid Day Skipper ( Local Waters ) ticket. Minimum requirement for this course is a valid Day Skippers Ticket.

This course bridges the gap between Day and Coastal Skipper. The Local Waters skipper is competent to 1. Take out a yacht as skipper by day or night in his/her local waters. 2. Captain a watch on any passage by day or by night.


  • The candidate must have a sound understanding of the Day Skipper's syllabus plus the following important aspects:
  • Colregs and IALA
  • Local Knowledge
  • Navigational disciplines on a Coastal Passage
  • Night sailing.

Duration: Normally 4 evenings run over 4 weeks ( i.e. once a week )or 4 consecutive weekday evenings, however we liase with you individually and plan times to suit you. Please feel free to contact us.

Instructor to Student Ratio: Max. 1: 4 or less. 
Cost: R3200,00 pp.

Fee includes all the course notes and membership of the RCYC  for the duration of the course with secure parking, members discount in the bar & restaurant.

NB. A compulsory deposit of R250.00 pp is required for your access card to the club which is refundable at the end of the course.

How to book a course: you require a 50% deposit together with your name and course as  reference.

This will secure your place on the course. Balance of your fees is due on or before the first day of the course.

NB. We will notify you of the pick up point on the day the course begins. Please bring warm clothes, something to eat and drink for yourself and shoes with non-marking soles.
